Principal’s Letter

Dear Zervas Families,

As of this publishing, there are just a few school days to go!  I know it is said every year, but it is amazing how fast the time goes. These last few weeks have been filled with picnics, class trips, concerts, curriculum shares, and other opportunities that allow us to reflect back on all the year has brought.  We have much to be excited about and to celebrate here at Zervas School!

Step Up Day:  On Monday, June 17, students in grades K-4 took part in “Step Up Day”.  Students had a chance to visit the next grade level and meet the next year’s teaching team.  We realize the level of uncertainty that can go along with making the transition to another grade level and hope that this is reduced after meeting the whole team of teachers.  The teachers shared some highlights for the coming year that children can look forward to and answered some of their questions.

Class Lists and Welcome Back Letters:  Class lists for all Newton’s elementary students will be emailed on Friday, August 23rd.  In addition, this year, families will also receive their child’s teacher’s Welcome Back letter electronically on August 23rd.   We hope this will allow families a bit more time to prepare for the first day of school.

Lost and Found: All of the items from our Lost and Found are laid out on tables in the main hallway.  Please look through and claim what belongs to you!  All leftover items will be removed and donated on Thursday, June 20.

Summer Projects and Learning: Over the summer months, many staff take time to reflect on the past year and make plans for the upcoming year.  As part of this, teachers are involved in reading professional books, attending various conferences and courses, and participating in various professional development opportunities.  This summer, as part of the goals that the staff and I have outlined for the school, 12 staff members and I will be working on the development of a plan that highlights our whole school values, our approach to discipline and our behavioral expectations.  This plan will serve to outline ways that teachers and students can promote classroom and school community, specify particular activities and practices that allow all students to feel included and a part of our school culture, and develop various routines and expectations for all students to follow.  This will be ongoing work that will continue into the fall.  Students and families will be a part of this work and will hear more about this at the start of the new school year.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon: Thank you to Elisa D’Andrea for organizing this spring’s luncheon. There was again a wonderful array of food choices. The staff sincerely appreciates the opportunity to spend time eating, talking and relaxing together as a group. Thank you for your generous display of appreciation.

Last Day of School:  Please also note that dismissal on Wednesday, June 26th is at 12:00 PM.  It is very important for you to pick up your child on time as it is also an early release for staff.

PTO Thanks and our Volunteer Appreciation Coffee: It was wonderful to take a few moments last Friday at our 1st Annual Volunteer Appreciation Coffee to acknowledge all of the many parents who have given us so much support, time and assistance throughout the school year.  Your volunteering in both big and small ways not only moves the school forward, but it gives your children the message that school is an important place and that you and the teachers are working together for their benefit.

This year cannot end without heartfelt thanks to Joanne Hooker and Helen Haley who have worked closely with me this year as the PTO Co-Presidents.  It has been my pleasure and privilege to have the opportunity to work with them in this capacity.  They have committed countless hours to ensure that the Zervas School experience is an exceptional one for all of our children.   I also wish to recognize this year’s board members who are stepping down and those newly elected to serve for the coming year.  We have a strong foundation to build upon and I look forward to working with all of you next year!

Summer Office Hours: Starting July 3, the main office will be closed for the summer.  Phone messages will be checked periodically throughout the summer.  The office will reopen on Monday, August 19.

Summer Classroom Visit Day: Our annual Classroom Visit Day will take place on Thursday, August 29 at 1:30-2:30.  This is an opportunity for you and your child to visit his/her new teacher. Please know that the end of August is a very busy time of year for teachers as they are preparing for the first day of school.  We ask that you limit your visiting to this time.

I wish each and every member of the Zervas School Community a restful summer.  I hope that you are able to find moments to spend some quality time with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Diana
