June PTO Co-President newsletter

Dear Zervas Families:

There are only a few weeks left in the school year, but a lot is planned for June!

We kicked off the month with a wonderful Family Cultural Event yesterday evening.  Thank you to all who joined us for a wide range of delicious dishes followed by music and entertainment from parent Peter Malagodi and the Bamidele Dancers and Drummers of West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean.  A huge thank you to Katie Davenport and Amy Behrens for their tremendous dedication in brainstorming ideas and organizing this event, and to the entire Creative Arts and Sciences and Zervas Community Connections committees for hosting, including parents Miho Kurata-Anthony, Liz Beckett, Alicia Collins, Suzanne Chow and Elizabeth Mercado-Green and staff Alley Bartholomew, Diana Beck, Harriet Hurworth, Maggie Williamson, Chris O’Rourke, Rebecca Deeks, and Ed Boles.

Many families also participated in our Spring Library Book Sale by purchasing books at the Cultural Event to donate to our library.  It’s not too late to do so!  Please consider honoring your children’s teachers by visiting http://www.btsb.com/ sosl/zervaselementaryschool1 before June 15.  Each book donated will contain a bookplate with a personal dedication to the Zervas teacher or staff member of your choice.  Thank you to Lou Bonegio for working with Ms. Kinney to select the books and run the book sale with great enthusiasm.

Tomorrow, June 7 is Color Day.  It is not too late to sign up to help run stations at http://vols.pt/sDLCfm.  Thank you to Meryl Miller and Debra Stump for recruiting volunteers and helping Ms. Gilbert with other logistics and to all parent volunteers.  This fun day for the kids would not be possible without their help.

We hope to see many of you at the PTO Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, June 10 at Mary-Sheila Leese‘s home.  Thank you to Mary-Sheila for hosting and to the Zervas teachers and staff for the delicious breakfast treats that they have planned for us.  All parents are welcome!  At the breakfast, we’ll also be presenting and voting on our PTO Board members for the 2016-17 school year.  The proposed slate is:

Co-Presidents:  Jessica Davis and Alicia Collins

VPs:  Lisa DePalma, Tim D’Souza, Wendy Feiner, Bindiya Stancampiano and Amy Waksler

Treasurer:  Sandy Sloane

Secretary:  Jenn Martin

Legal Advisor:  Craig Waksler

On Tuesday, June 14, the PTO will be sponsoring a special speaker event featuring clinician and parenting coach Joani Geltman, who will address many of the tough issues facing teens and tweens, including cell phone use, social media, navigating changing friendships and being exposed to alcohol, drugs and physical relationships.  Thank you to 5th grade parents Amy Behrens, Rachel Conroy and Kim Neal for bringing Joani to Zervas.

We also hope that you can join us for our Spring Family Picnic, which will be on Wednesday, June 15 from 6-7:30 pm at Carr (rain or shine).  Please consider helping to distribute pizza and drinks at the event; you can sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/ go/10c084eada623a1f85-zervas2.  Thank you to Sanskriti Singh and Peter Torrebiarte for coordinating what promises to be another wonderful opportunity to connect with Zervas families before the summer.

Finally, it’s not too late to seek a spot on the Zervas School Council, which is a great way to help Dr. Beck make important program, operation, and budget decisions affecting our children.  Parents are elected for a three-year term and there are two spots open for the term beginning this fall.  If interested, please send Dr. Beck a short description of your background and how you would make a difference to Zervas by Friday, June 10.

Have a great summer!

Jessica Davis & Lori Berkowitz, PTO Co-Presidents
