July Co-Presidents Letter

Dear Zervas Parents,

Last Friday I was at graduation for the high school where I teach, and the student speaker quoted her dad: “Time moves slow very quickly.” Isn’t that sort of how the school year felt? It felt slow while we were in the midst of it, but now we can’t believe it’s the end?!?

We want to thank all of you who volunteered this year for Zervas, whether it was for a half hour library class or on a committee that required a big time commitment. All of the wonderful school activities and events would not be possible without you. Diana and the teachers and staff would like to say thank you by treating you to some yummy baked goods and coffee at the Waban Library Center on Friday, June 9th from 8:15-9:15. We will also vote in new PTO Board members for next year. Please join us!

Speaking of PTO board members, we are sad to say good-bye to Lisa DePalma and Bindiya Stancampiano. Lisa has been a tireless advocate for students with special needs both as a vice president of the PTO and through the Understanding our Differences program. Her daughter Angelina is graduating from Zervas this year. Bindiya and her family are moving to Rochester, NY for a great job opportunity. Bindiya has been a rock star in charge of Teacher Appreciation for the last few years. She has organized countless lunches and gifts for the teachers and staff so that they know how grateful we are for their work. We will miss Lisa and Bindiya very much.

Sandy Sloane has one more year at Zervas but will passing on the PTO Treasurer’s baton to Kai Shanahan. Sandy has done a superb job keeping tabs on all the small details of the PTO budget. I love the mix of efficiency and empathy that she brings to the role. Thanks, Sandy, for your terrific work.

I must also say a huge thank you to my co-president Jessica Davis who will cycle off after her second year in the position. Jessica is the most organized person you will ever meet! She is a true team player who does more than her share of the workload. I really appreciate all of her guidance this year as I was learning the ropes. Luckily, Jessica will stay on the PTO as its secretary next year. Thanks, Jessica, for all you have done for Zervas! And thank you to Jenn Martin for stepping into the co-president role next year.

Lastly, a big thank you to Lyla Goldstein for her tireless work as Hospitality co-chair. We send an email to Lyla asking, “Can you provide coffee and pastries for this meeting?” and Lyla says, “I’m on it!” Thanks so much, Lyla.

It says something about the Zervas community that within 24 hours of the call going out, all the volunteer spots for Color Day were filled! Thank you. Unfortunately, the rain on the 6th has bumped Color Day to next Tuesday, June 13th. Volunteer spots have been rolled over to next week, so if you can no longer make it, just delete your name on the Sign-up Genius link. We will also need a few new volunteers to fill in for those parents who can’t make the new date. Check it out if you’re available. It’s always a fun day!

We’d love to see you all at the Spring Family Picnic on Wednesday, June 14th at 6:00pm at Carr. Thanks to the generous support of Zervas families this year, we are stepping it up at the picnic to include pizza, veggies, fruit, drinks, and a special visit from an ice cream truck. Just bring a picnic blanket, and the rest will be provided.

You probably saw a flier come home about the Spring Library Gift Book Sale. Books will be on display at the picnic if you would like to choose one to donate to the new Zervas library. Your donation can be an end of the year gift to your child’s teacher as you can donate it in his or her honor. Books are also for sale online by clicking here.

Thanks for getting to the bottom of this long newsletter! Good luck with the end of the school year.

Thank you,

Alicia Collins & Jessica Davis
