Relay for Life

Dear Parents,
This year the Newton/Brookline Relay for Life fundraising event will be held at Forte Park in Nonantum on Saturday-Sunday, May 19-20th.

Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life is an active and meaningful event for children and their families as we try to raise funds to support cancer patients, caregivers and doctors striving to cure this disease.

Mason-Rice School has supported Relay for Life for the past five years and we are hoping that every elementary school in Newton will support one team of walkers at this year’s event.

Relay for Life is an annual event which takes place in many locations around the county. The families at Mason-Rice support two teams with roughly 25 walkers on each team. We arrive at Forte Park around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and begin to set up our tents. Welcome activities begin around 6:00 p.m. with various speeches given by honored guests, usually including Mayor Setti Warren.

The Relay begins with a Survivor Walk where all of us who have survived cancer take a silent stroll once around the field. At the completion of this first lap everyone is invited to join us. Walking continues off and on throughout the evening while different activities for children are held in the middle of the field.

After the sun has set, we light hundreds of Luminaria Bags which help us remember and honor those survivors we love and those individuals who have lost their fight with cancer. It is a moving and beautiful part of the event. All activities except for the walking end by 11:00 p.m.

The Relay for Life is an excellent way to introduce young children to world of charitable giving. While it is not necessary Continue reading

Clothing Drive

Junior Girl Scout Troop 73010 is organizing a community children’s clothing (and other items) drive for Cradles to Crayons.  Clothes needed from newborn through adult medium.  This is a great time to clean out your closets of outgrown but still in good shape clothes.  Go green and help children in need.  Books, baby equipment, toys and games are welcomed too.

The drop-off will be at City Hall during Newton Serves, on April 29th from 9:00 – 3:00.  We did this last year and filled a truck.  This year we are hoping to do better, maybe even fill 2 trucks.  For more information about Cradles to Crayons:  http://cradlestocrayons.org/boston.  Other questions about the drive, feel free to contact Alicia Bowman at alicia.bowman@comcast.net

Drive a Senior–Make a Friend!

Newton at Home, a member organization dedicated to helping Newton seniors age in their own homes, is looking for volunteers who can give rides to seniors.  Make a new friend while helping someone get to a doctor’s appointment, the supermarket, a social event or the airport.  Volunteer as much as you can at your convenience, and know that you have made a difference in a Newton senior’s life. You’ll meet interesting people and share great conversation along the way!

Newton at Home is also looking for volunteers to help with marketing communications and public relations.  If you are creative and a good writer and are looking for a wonderful organization to help, look no further!  For more information, call Julie Plaut Mahoney at volcoord@newtonathome.org.
