Looking for a great volunteer job?

Newton at Home (NAH) is a quickly-growing non-profit organization in Newton, dedicated to enabling older adults to remain living in their homes safely and independently as they grow older. NAH is looking for a volunteer to serve as an office adminstrator. This means providing general office support for the Executive Director, handling member requests for services, maintaining and entering data into NAH databases, assisting with events and mailings, and scheduling meetings. Volunteers need good computer and communication skills. Must be willing to commit to three days per week from 9:30 am-1:30 pm through the rest of the school year (until June 2012). For more information please contact: Julie Plaut Mahoney, Ph.D., Coordinator of Volunteers, Newton at Home, 617-795-2560 or volcoord@newtonathome.org.

Be a Winter Buddy: Join Newton at Home’s New Winter Buddy Program!

New England winters are long and there are storms aplenty. Newton at Home has designed a new Winter Buddy Program to encourage connections between seniors and other community members when the snow and wind are swirling outside.  Being a buddy means that a volunteer or volunteer family would connect with a Newton at Home member to:

1. Advise that a storm is coming.
2. Assess the need for essential supplies (milk, bread, flashlights and batteries, etc).
3. Develop plans for snow removal.
4. Call your buddy every day of the storm.
5. Direct your buddy to appropriate help when necessary.

Volunteering as a Winter Buddy will require minimal time commitment, but would give Buddies a sense of connection and satisfaction from helping others. If you would like to participate, please contact Bonnie Katz at bkatzdesign@gmail.com or 617-244-0694.

We will hold a short Winter Buddy Training session on Wednesday, Dec 14,  at 11:30am  as well as several dates in January. Training sessions will be held at our office, 206 Waltham St, in the Scandinavian Living Center building. For more information about the Winter Buddy program and Newton at Home, please check our website at www.newtonathome.org.

Save the date of Sunday Dec. 11 for the First Unitarian Society in Newton’s Alternative Gift Fair.  With the stress, expense, and expectation surrounding the holidays, it’s no wonder they more often exhaust rather than uplift us. It’s not too late to re-think your family routines.

How does it work? When you make a donation toward a specific charitable organization, you receive a card detailing your gift to give to your recipient. A perfect opportunity to buy for those folks who have everything. Tax- deductible gifts starting at $10. 00.

Volunteer Opportunity – Snow Shoveling Service for Your Neighbors

The City of Newton is preparing a list of STUDENTS (or adults) willing to volunteer snow shoveling services for your local senior/disabled residents. Can YOU or your children please help out? Please know how very much we would appreciate help to keep Newton’s sidewalks safe for walking this winter. As the law now requires that homeowners remove snow from their properties, your assistance to your neighbors who are unable to remove the snow themselves will help keep them in compliance with the law.

Participants should be aware: When you sign to be on this list, your name, village and phone # will be made available to those residents, often the elderly, needing assistance with snow shoveling.

Please send the following information to Parks & Recreation by mail, fax or email. Send to 70 Crescent Street, Newton, MA 02466, (fax) 617.796.1512 or e-mail parks@newtonma.gov. Please return by Tuesday November 1st.

Cupcakes !

Enjoy Cupcakes In June To Benefit Horizons For Homeless Children!

Visit Treat Cupcake Bar at 1450 Highland Avenue in Needham during the month of June and for every “Monster HHC Cupcake” purchased, 50% of proceeds will go directly to Horizons for Homeless Children!

Every year the Zervas 5th grade chooses an organization to help as a part of the graduation Social Action Project. The Zervas class of 2011 chose Horizons for Homeless Children, an organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of homeless children and their families throughout Massachusetts.

Zervas 5th graders wrote letters to the Treat Cupcake Bar to nominate Horizons for Homeless Children for “Treat Others Well”, a program in which a charitable organization is selected, a special cupcake is created and sold during a designated month, and 50% of all proceeds from that cupcake are given directly to the organization. Horizons for Homeless Children was chosen for the month of June!

So be sure to visit Treat Cupcake Bar during the month of June to enjoy lots of Monster HHC cupcakes (no flyer needed) – bring a group, order HHC cupcakes for birthdays, graduations, and other special occasions, and be sure to tell your friends and family to visit Treat Cupcake Bar for HHC cupcakes as well!
