Co-Presidents Letter

Hello to all,

We hope this letter finds you and your family settling into the new school year routine.  The PTO has been off to a busy start.  Here are some of the things we’ve been up to over the summer and during the month of September.

Our databases were updated in order to create the Zervas Directory, an important resource that will be coming out soon (thank you Meryl Miller).  The Zervas Garden thrived thanks to the many families who tended to it over the summer (thank you Priya Wagner and Erin Grabowski for leading this effort).  Our Welcoming Committee Chair (Amy Waskler) contacted new Zervas families over the summer to welcome them to Zervas; and the teachers enjoyed a nice breakfast and lunch when they arrived back at school from their summer break (thank you Elisa D’Andrea).

The welcome back packets you received on the first day of school were assembled the week before school started thanks to the work of Kathryn Klassman, Meryl Miller and Caroline Wilson– and their trusted helpers (Audrey Shuler, Serena and Abby Miller and Halley and Nicholas Wilson-Thayer).

On the first day of school, the Welcome Coffee gave us a chance to catch up with old friends and meet some new parents.  Thank you to Barbara Talvitie for putting out a great spread for this event.  Thank you also to Peter Meyer and Lincoln Street Coffee for generously donating fresh, delicious coffee.

Our Fall Family Picnic, co-chaired by Jane Lanzillo and Ann Rich was a lot of fun and we were fortunate to have great weather that evening. Many thanks to our co-chairs and volunteers for taking time away from their families and friends to help out with this event.

Kindergarten Soccer started up and continues to thrive, thanks to Margaret Jacobi, Caterina Betancourt, and the many other parents who volunteer their time to make this program successful. K soccer remains a key fundraiser for the Zervas PTO, and the proceeds directly benefit the school and students.  We are actively looking for new parents to help run this program.  If you are interested, please contact Joanne Hooker at .

We successfully approved our PTO budget at the first annual PTO meeting and also heard many speakers discuss what makes their family diverse.  Thank you to those who participated on the panel and to Amy Behrens and Julie Robinson for coordinating the talk.

We completed picture day smoothly and managed to see some bright smiles.  We would like to thank Mary Hoppe for coordinating and running this event along with the other parent volunteers who pitched in (Ron Abel, Cara Attanucci, Mariana Cogan, Lisa DePalma, David Dubin, Julie Goetzler, Erin Grabowski, Helen Haley, Tira Kahn, Julie Kay, Edie Knight, Svet Levin, Barbara Talvitie, and Caroline Wilson).

As always, when acknowledging our volunteers, we run the risk of inadvertently leaving people out. Our sincere apologies if we failed to mention your name.  Please know that your time and energy are invaluable to making Zervas a wonderful place.

Looking ahead to October, we hope you’ll join us for:

  • Walk to School Day on October 5th
  • Zervas Pumpkin Patch on October 15th
  • Halloween Family Dance on October 28th

We’re looking forward to another fantastic year at Zervas. We hope everyone will find a way to become involved.
