Nominations for School Council due this week

The Zervas School Council is a great way to get involved with important decisions that affect our children.

Mandated by state law, the Council serves as an advisory board to the principal. Members include Zervas Principal, 4 teachers, 5 parent representatives, and a community member. School Council provides a forum to discuss and advise the principal on issues that arise throughout the year, including programmatic and budgeting matters; the school improvement plan; safety and building maintenance issues; and other relevant topics. Meetings are held once a month from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Zervas School Council is a separate entity from the PTO. School Council focuses on programmatic, operational, and budgetary issues, while the PTO provides social and community support and curriculum enhancement activities. The PTO administers the School Council election each year.

Parents are elected for 3-year terms to School Council. This June, two representatives (Julie Robinson and Helen Haley) will be moving off. If you would like to be a candidate for School Council beginning in the fall of 2012, please write a short description of your background, why you are interested in the position, and how you would make a difference to Zervas. Candidate statements can be left in the PTO box in the office or e-mailed to stephen_griffin@newton.k12.ma.us and are due by Friday, May 25th.

The School Council election will be held on Monday, June 4th, Tuesday, June 5th and Wednesday, June 6th at drop off and pickup.

If you are considering running for School Council or have questions, please contact Steve Griffin for further information.
