Principal’s Letter

Greetings Zervas Families,

March is upon us and with it comes the promise of spring!  As the weather begins to get warmer and we enjoy longer days of sunlight, the positive energy of the students can be felt around the school.  When I visit classes these days, I so enjoy seeing the high level of student engagement, the hands-on projects and activities, the expert level instruction, and the smiles on the students’ faces.  It is truly a joy to be a member of the Zervas Community.

All School Meetings, Zervas All Stars, and the “Coming and Going of the Rain”:  You may have heard one of these terms from your child recently.  What are these, you might wonder.   Each month, the school community comes together to celebrate our successes and recognize the accomplishments of our students.  At each All School Meeting, a different grade level “hosts” and presents either a song, poem or project that they have been working on in class.  We then highlight 3-4 students per class with a “Zervas All Star” which recognize those students who have exemplified one of our School Core Values.  The goal is that every student will be honored in this way by the end of the year.  To close our meeting, a few 5th graders lead the students in a routine called the “Coming and Going of the Rain”.  Ask your child to demonstrate this for you and then imagine what it sounds like when 325 students are doing it all together!

Lost and Found: It is that time of year again.  Our Lost and Found is overflowing.  We will be placing all lost and found items on tables in the hallway starting March 6.  Please look through these, or have your child look through, if you are missing an item.  On March 15, all unclaimed items will be donated.

Voting Day and School Security On March 12: Newton will hold a Special Election, so the Zervas Gym will be used as a polling site throughout the day.  To maintain our school security, we are asking all voters to use the back gym door and not enter the school hallways.  Signs will be prominently displayed outside the school and minimal parking will be available in the back of the school near the gym door.  To help with this we will have parent volunteers at the front door directing voters to the correct door.  In addition, the front door will be locked during the school hours of 8:40-12:30.  Parents who are volunteering or visiting the school during these times are still welcome to come in.

Thank you, Diana
