The Zervas School Council is a great way to get involved with important decisions that affect our children.
Mandated by state law, the Council serves as an advisory board to the principal. Members include the Zervas Principal, as well as an equal number of parent and teacher representatives, and a community member. School Council provides a forum to discuss and advise the principal on issues that arise throughout the year, including programmatic and budgeting matters; the school improvement plan; safety and building maintenance issues; and other relevant topics. Meetings are held once a month from 7pm to 8:30pm, with the schedule set at the beginning of the school year.
Zervas School Council is a separate entity from the PTO. School Council focuses on programmatic, operational, and budgetary issues, while the PTO provides social and community support and curriculum enhancement activities. The PTO administers the School Council election each year.
Parents are elected for 3-year terms to School Council. This June, David Stolow will be completing his term, and we are looking for two parent representatives who would begin their terms in the Fall of 2013. If you would like to be a candidate for School Council, please write a short description of your background, why you are interested in the position, and how you would make a difference to Zervas. Candidate statements can be left in the PTO box in the office or e-mailed to Diana Beck at Diana_Beck@newton.k12.ma.us. These statements are due by end of day Friday, June 7th. The School Council election will be held the week of June 10th at drop off and pick-up.
If you are considering running for School Council and have questions, please contact any of the current representatives listed below or feel free to talk with Diana Beck for further information.
