Zervas School Council Needs You

The Zervas School Council needs two new members for the upcoming school year and we are looking for parents who would like to serve in this important role.  The School Council is a great way to get involved with important decisions that affect our children.

Mandated by state law, the Council serves as an advisory board to the principal. Members include the Zervas Principal, as well as an equal number of parent and teacher representatives, and a community member. School Council provides a forum to discuss and advise the principal on issues that arise throughout the year, including programmatic and budgeting matters; the school improvement plan; safety and building maintenance issues; and other relevant topics. Meetings are held once a month from 6:30 pm to 8:00pm, with the schedule set at the beginning of the school year.

Zervas School Council is a separate entity from the PTO. School Council focuses on programmatic, operational, and budgetary issues, while the PTO provides social and community support and curriculum enhancement activities. The PTO administers the School Council election each year.

Parents are elected for 3-year terms to School Council. If you would like to be a candidate for School Council, please write a short description of your background, why you are interested in the position, and how you would make a difference to Zervas. Candidate statements can be left in the PTO box in the office or e-mailed to Diana Beck at Diana_Beck@newton.k12.ma.usThese statements are due by end of day Thursday, June 5th. The School Council election will be held the week of June 9th at drop off and pick-up.
