November Co-Presidents Letter

Dear Zervas Families:

It’s hard to believe that it’s already November and our move to Carr is only two months away.  Look out for information packets coming home this week about bus routes to Zervas at Carr and the ZASP options for the December early release and January no-school days.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us or to Dr. Beck with any questions or concerns about the transition.

It was great to see so many of you with your families at the Halloween Dance last Friday.  The kids’ costumes were adorable and they all seemed to have a blast.  A special thank you to Julie Kay and Rachel Conroy for organizing and running this dance so smoothly for the past four years and to all of the parents and Zervas alums who helped this year, including Martin Kay, John Conroy, Julie Songer, Irina Gorovits, Ginna Martin, Stephanie Berzin, Nancy Forsyth, Keri O’Brien, Ashish Jha, Debra Stump, Miho Kurata-Anthony, Yong Cai, Meryl Miller, Erin Grabowski, Aaron Davis, Christine Detjen, Darlene Nedeljkovic, Lou Bonegio, Dion Rhodes, D.R. Widder,  Sage Widder, Julius Starkman, Chris Neal, Kim Neal, Scott Friedman, Erika Pond, Jan Gundersen, Alicia Collins, Suzy Peled-Spigelman, Christine Lesburg, Matt Goldstein, Jackie Washington, Devyani Misra, Sandy Sloane and Madhu Natarajan.  Please let us know if you are interested in helping to organize next year’s dance.

Thank you to Jenn Martin and Sandy Sloane for their hard work recognizing all of our walkers on International Walk to School Day.  Jenn and Sandy were recently recognized by the Newton-wide PTO Council for the fun and creative ways that they have encouraged Zervas families to walk to school when possible.  Look out for information about how to decorate our Zervas Thanksgiving turkey as part of our Thanksgiving Walk to School later this month.

Biking to school is another great alternative and our 4th graders learned how to do so safely this month by taking a special ride with a Newton police officer.  Thank you to Chip Lesburg for helping to organize Bike Safety Day, and toMatt Goldstein, Lisa DePalma, Laurie Smith-Michaels, Karen Hamilton, Jenn Martin, Aimee Sprung and Ron Abel for riding with the kids.

We would also like to thank all of our grade and room parents for the hard work that they are doing to keep our community connected.  More than half of the kindergarten moms mingled over drinks and desserts at the Windsor Club in October, and many more mom and dad nights out are planned for November and December.  Please look out for emails from your grade and room parents with more information, and thank them for coordinating such fun events.

If you wish to have your child photographed at Photo Re-Take Day on Nov. 6th, please contact Annie Ganot at ASAP.  Our annual Coat Drive is in full swing, so please drop your gently used warm winter coats in the big bin outside the front office.  Come out on Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 to watch our kids perform at our Variety Shows starting at 6:30 pm.  And don’t forget to sign up for our second annual Zervas 5k Turkey Trot on November 21st at   We hope to see you at some of these upcoming events!
