Co-Presidents Letter February 2019

Hello Zervas Families,

We hope you all are staying warm.  February, here we come!  We are starting off the month with a Principal Coffee on Friday, February 1st at 8:30am in the Cafetorium.  Join Dr. Beck, Sally Mazur, Lynn Chachkes and Nicole O’Reilly as they continue the discussion around the Zones of Regulation Curriculum.

We want to do a big shout out to the Green Committee:  Mindy Gomes Casseres, Ali Kalis, Kelly Dissing-Olesen and Gautam Sundaram.  Working together with the City of Newton, Zervas is piloting an elementary school composting program.  The Committee trained the 5th grade Student Council, who then trained the rest of the school to properly compost at Zervas.  The program is off to a great start and we are very excited to be reducing our trash output.

We want to send a big thank you to our Creative Arts and Sciences Committee:  Will Joyner, Jessica Davis, Katie Davenport and Karen Burzdak.  They have been working hard behind the scenes with our teachers organizing curriculum-enriching programming for all grades.  In December, the Voci Angelica Trio came to Zervas as part of the CAS Concert Series.  It’s a busy and dynamic program and we are grateful for this dedicated team of CAS volunteers at Zervas.

We hope you have seen the letters announcing that the newly redone Kaleidoscope Bags are in circulation.  Room Parents and teachers are ensuring that all students have the opportunity to bring a bag home for a week. They are filled with culturally diverse and age-appropriate books, games, movie suggestions and recipes as a way for students and families to see themselves and a variety of other cultures.  This project is thanks to the hard work of Zervas teachers Rebecca Deeks and Chris O’Rourke, Zervas Community Connections committee members Amy Behrens, Kim Hermesch, Elisa Derby, Chika Yano, Serena Toh, Kristin Hovis, Delia Cheung Hom, Valerie Graf and Veronica Leon, and thanks to the generous support of a Zervas family committed to these efforts.

Family Movie Night was a really nice evening at Zervas.  We hope Pixar releases another set of new shorts for next year!  Thank you to Amanda Zurick for organizing the night and for our team of volunteers who pitched in to help with the snack table and cleanup duty:  Eileen Imada, Pisey Burgess, Daniela Mackinnon, Bethany Montserrat, Katie Britton and Josh Jacobs.

Coming up, spend the evening playing games with your student at Family Game Night on Thursday, February, 7th, 6:15-7:45pm.  Eureka!, a local game store, will provide loads of family-friendly games and puzzles for all to enjoy. This year, a few games will be set up in the music room for kids who find the cafetorium to be overwhelming. Pizza will be available for $1 a slice and students who attend will receive a homework pass for the evening.
